MUSEUM ACHIEVES FULL ACCREDITATION

Weare pleased to announce that Looe Museum has achieved full accreditation.Congratulations to all those who haveworked so hard to achieve this status.

Itmeans that the Museum meets the high national standards laid down by the ArtsCouncil. The requirements include appropriate management arrangements, effective forward planning, satisfactory procedures for the management ofcollections and good quality service. The focus is very much on helping museumsto meet users’ needs and interests. Importantly for us, it also means that weare better placed to seek grant funding.

Thenew Management Committee is already busy in the winter months planningimprovements and preparing for its re-opening in the Spring. Anyone interestedin helping to take forward the Museum’s work – there are all kinds of ways inwhich assistance can be put to good use – should contact Judy Martin at theTrust Office in the Guildhall (tel. 01509 263709).

THE NEW YEAR FIREWORKS

MartinRobinson and his team did a magnificent job in providing official fireworkdisplays at 6pm and midnight, the latter – complete with countdown clock –being one of the best ever. The muchvalued and often unseen voluntary work included stewarding and clear up; aswell as things like risk assessment and liaison with ambulance and policeservices to ensure public safety.

Therewas another unauthorised display launched from the beach just afterwards, whichcaused some public anxiety. This was not least because, unlike for the officialdisplays, no arrangements were in place to keep people away from dangerousdebris. Trustees are not killjoys and have steadfastly set their faces againstunnecessary rules and regulations for the beach; but we cannot condone unapprovedactivities that may put other users at risk.
